Hans began writing movies reviews for Crankleft.com, a website devoted to comics and entertainment, a little over a year ago. He now reviews movie for The Projectionist and the Stanwood Camano News.

What does one do when you have everything, but the only thing holding you back is a stammer in your voice? When can we accept that all greatness comes from help of others? As shown in such movies like Good Will Hunting and Ordinary People, sometimes it takes someone to take us out of our comfort zone to help us find who we are, and to obtain the success destined to have. So the question is if The King's Speech is worth the quest to see King George IV find his success? The answer is yes, from the beginning of the film till the movie ends.

King Speech is directed by Tom Hooper (John Adams series), about the King George VI played by Colin Firth (A Single Man, Mamma Mia!) who developed a speech stammer at a small age which makes it difficult for him to speak. It is a big deal since he is the son of the King George V played by Michael Gambon (Harry Potter series, Fantastic Mr. Fox). In the brief interaction with his father, there was a sense of frustration and disappointment in his father’s relationship, not only with “Bertie” AKA the King George VI, but also with his elder son Edward played by Guy Pearce (Memento, The Hurt Locker) who neglects his responsibilities to being the original next heir to the throne to King George V.

Bertie received helped from with lovely wife Queen Elizabeth played by Helena Bonham Carter (Alice in Wonderland, Sweeney Todd); she was the one who made the personal search to find the right doctor to help fix her husband’s stammer. She came across a doctor named Lionel Logue played by Geoffrey Rush (Pirates of the Caribbean, Shine) who was a little less ordinary in his methods than the prior doctors Bertie had gone to. In fact, I would say his methods got under Beartie’s skin more than once throughout the film.

As the story continues, the audience understands the issues of class between Royals and Commoners, it becomes a more interesting a tale of perseverance and hard work, to the point that this story leaves you wanting more.

I must admit, when entering into the theatre to watch this film, I was hesitating in the fact that I didn’t know what kind of film I was going to see. The plot seems simple, yet once the movie started, the simple plot comes to be a roller coaster ride into the life and mind of Firth’s character. Colin Firth deserves the Oscar node for his performance for Best Actor. The interaction between Firth and Rush was so fun to watch. It was like watching two teenagers and had a similar relationship that you saw between Sherlock and Watson in movie Sherlock Holmes.

Don’t let the R rating keep you from seeing this film. It is due to the use of the “F-word” being used in a couple of scenes. It is used in context and not like the movie Goodfellas, where it is used in the common conversation. It is a very wholesome and proper film.

The King’s Speech really shows that even a King has imperfections and needs a friend. It is amazing to see how one’s weakness can keep someone from extreme greatness. I recommend this movie to everyone and anyone who needs inspiration to overcome their flaws and/or weaknesses in life.

One of my favorite activities to do outside of work isattending sporting events in Seattle. One of the more enjoyable for me has always been going to a Seahawksgame at Qwest Field. Qwest Field,in my opinion, is one of the best stadiums to attend a football game. I was lucky enough to attend this lastweekend’s game versus the St. Louis Rams in a game in which the winner made itto the playoffs. It was truly the bestexperience I have had at a sporting event here in Seattle. The crowd was electric which reallymade for a great atmosphere all game long.

The one thing about Seahawk games is the fact that the fansdo have an effect on the game which really makes it an enjoyable experience forall in attendance. If youever get a chance to attend a NFL game at Qwest Field, I highly recommendit. There are not many stadiumsthat compare and the games are fun not only for the avid sports fan but for thewhole family.

Parent's Weekend at Syracuse University

The last weekend in September was Parents Weekend at Syracuse University, so Sue and I flew back to spent the weekend with our daughter, Ashley. After missing Parents Weekend for the first three years of college, we finally made it back for Ashley's senior year.

The weekend was packed with activities. Along with the tour of the campus and the city, Ashley took us to some of the local eateries including Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, which was recently featured on the Travel Channel show "Man Versus Food". The food was great and there was lots of it. Ashley also drove us up to Skaneateles in the Finger Lakes area of upstate New York. About 30 minutes out of Syracuse, it was a beautiful (and very hot) day and it was a great way to spend our second day in town. But the best part was just spending the day with Ashley.

Saturday was filled with more activities including a pre-game pep rally on the campus, and then we had front row seats in the Carrier Dome to watch Syracuse beat Colgate, one of their arch rivals, by a score of 42-7. Immediately following the game, we had to change and drive to a private dinner hosted by Ashley's sorority Gamma Phi Beta. We had a wonderful dinner, had a chance to meet several of her "sisters" and their parents. Gamma Phi was founded in Syracuse in 1874.

Finally Sunday arrived and it was time to fly home. Travel is an all day process since you cannot get a direct flight between Seattle and Syracuse. After traveling back and forth several times a year for the past three years, I don't know how Ashley does it. She has become a seasoned traveler after flying cross country for thousands of air miles. Maybe she has enough to send her home "first class" after graduation in May 2011. That day will come before we know it and then we will make our next trip to Syracuse for Graduation Weekend.

Kin On 25th Anniversary Auction Dinner

Last Saturday, my wife Jeanni and I attended Kin On Community Health Care Center's 25th Anniversary Auction Dinner at the Hyatt Regency in Bellevue. Over 450 supporters attended the black tie affair. Following the live auction, there was ball room dancing for those brave enough to get out on the dance floor. It was a very fun event that raised a significant amount of money for an exceptional organization.

Kin On is a Seattle-based nonprofit organization the provides nursing and community health care to Seattle's Asian community. Today, Kin On's nursing facility is home to 100 residents. Kin On also provides home care to over 500 seniors. This in-home service allows seniors to maintain their independence while living at home.

Kin On has received many awards for their outstanding quality of service. Their future plans include building an independent living facility and senior center. The auction included a "fund-an-item" portion, which allowed attendees to make cash donations for specific parts of these new facilities. Over $58,000 was raised from this portion of the auction alone.

Scott and his family just returned from San Diego. They spent a relaxing week laying in the sun, surfing and visiting friends. What a great way toend the summer!

Walt just moved his son to Centralia for his second year ofcollege. His son plays baseball for Centralia Community College. We hope this is a winning year!

Jim and Sue are anxiously waiting to visit their daughter,Ashley, at Syracuse University later this month. The Syracuse football seasonalready started with a victory at Akron! They play University of Washington tomorrow. Go Cuse!

Hans will visit the "happiest place onearth"- Disneyland - later this month with his family. Hans, don't forget to give Mickey and Minniea hug from your friends at the office!

Mandi just completed her first 5K run on Camano Island. Wayto go Mandi!

Jordon has been busy with his baseball team and the purchaseof his new home.

Steve and his family just returned from Montana. They attended a reunion.

Marie and Hannah enjoyed a wonderful trip to Montana over LaborDay weekend. They had a fun time catching up with family.

Tina has been busy decorating her new home with her twochildren, Jordan and Payton.

Cash-saving secrets as shopping season reaches full swing

If there's a season to save, this is it. With the kids needing new clothes and supplies for school, and the holidays approaching, the coming months can be one of the costliest shopping times for families.

With everyone trying to save a little cash these days, there's no reason to pay full price on the items you'll need to buy. By shopping smart and being prepared, you'll be able to save significant money as you fulfill your family's wish list.

"As retailers look to get shoppers spending again after the recession, there are plenty of consumer-friendly deals to be had," says Ralph Bond, a Portland, Ore.-based consumer electronics reporter and radio personality. "Particularly in the area of electronics, there are always ways to shop smart and get more for your money."

Of course, nobody knows more about shopping and saving than parents themselves. A recent survey conducted in July by Haier America, a home appliance and consumer electronic company, asked 1,002 parents with kids in kindergarten through twelfth grade what their top three smartest steps are when the time comes to shop for back to school items. Here is how they responded:

* Compare prices (55 percent of respondents). By looking at newspaper ads and online resources that compare prices for certain products before you head out, you can save both money and time.

* Buy all or most of your purchases at sales (51 percent). Find information about when sales are occurring through your local newspaper, on television or on your favorite stores' websites.

* Shop at discount stores (42 percent). Discount stores can be a great resource, as many have good products that are either being discontinued or are sharply discounted for another reason.

"I also recommend shopping for products with multiple uses," says Bond. "This can especially be useful if you are looking at a few technological electronics upgrades for your home. For example, if you are looking for a new TV, consider one with multiple functions like the Haier Ultra Slim LED HDTV, which also functions as a computer monitor."

If you are in the market for a technology upgrade, you may want to consider how what you are purchasing can enhance your child's educational experience. As the numbers in the survey point out, children are using electronics to learn at home more than ever: 88 percent of parents responding to the survey considered television an educational tool, and 64 percent of parents say kids having their own computer or notebook is a necessity for kids' education. So while you might be buying a new TV for your own enjoyment, you could also consider it an educational aid for your children. Why Flood Insurance?

Which is more likely to occur, a fire loss or a flood loss? According to FEMA, a flood loss is 30 times more likely to happen than a fire loss. Regardless what how you add that up, 30 times anything is a lot!

So if that is the case, what is considered a flood? Many think of the recent floods in Tennessee or Hurricane Katrina, but the actual definition of a flood is “A general and temporary condition of partial or complete inundation of two or more acres of normally dry land area or of two or more properties (at least one of which is your property)” per FEMA.

In other words, flood can happen anywhere. Flood insurance cannot be bought with your homeowners insurance. The United States government has a monopoly on flood insurance. Depending on were you live, it is a requirement by law that banks and mortgage companies require Flood insurance on any residential or commercial building in a high risk flood zone.

Effective October 1, 2010, State Farm is no longer assisting in obtaining flood insurance. This is shocking, only because the heighten request for flood insurance has increased over the last few years.

Summer is here! Throughout the nation, the temperatures have risen from the 80's to over 100 degrees! While it is fun to be in the sun, it is important to take precautions. It just may even save your life! Here are some important tips to abide by:

Avoid overexposure of the sun

With the sun beating down, it is important to wear your sunscreen! It is good to catch some rays, for it supplies vitamin D to the body, but overdoing it can cause dehydration and even heat stroke. Especially for those who play in sports, drink lots of fluids! Please, those who are coaching sports teams, make sure your team is consuming fluids and have shade to rest in.

NEVER leave children or animals in park cars!!!!

Since 1998, there has been an estimated over 500 deaths of children left in cars! Within minutes of leaving them in a parked car, it can cause serious heat stroke.

Find ways to cool down

With those who don't have air conditioning, and your place of living became an oven, there are several places were you can go to cool off. For example going to your local grocery store, movie theatre, or mall. Just walk around or sit in the lobby and relax! Be creative and think of ways to keep cool and have fun while doing it!

Top 5 Father and Son Movies for Father's Day

Personal Lines Manager Hans Eskelsen gives us his top 5 father and son movies in honor of Father's Day which is this Sunday June 20th, 2010.

My love for the movies had come by my father, who taught me how to understand, enjoy, and yet respect movies. I want to present my top 5 best father and son movies of all time.

5. There Will Be Blood

     Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day Lewis) as a successful oil man never did business without his son HD, played by Dillon Freasier. Their relationship is genuine, and HD wouldn't do anything without his father, which explains at the end, how he had to make his son leave in with the truth, but the bit of bitterness to become successful with his new wife. It is a unique relationship that you really see between the father and son that you will ever see on film.

4. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

    What can be better than Harrison Ford as Indy, and his dad played by Sean Connery! These two great actors have the same great compassion in great historical artifacts and the Holy Grail. They conversed and even contended as father and son which is fun to watch. It is one of those movies where you watch and because of such great acting, that you see the similarities and the same quirkiness of a son and father throughout the whole movie. I love the fatherly lessons that even Indy has to learn, and see that Indy was still a boy at heart. With all the thrills, laughs, and tears, when you get to the ending, you feel the love and bond between a father and son regardless on the age of the son or the father.

3. The Lion King

     A Disney instant classic of which King Mufassa who rules the animal kingdom and the movie begins with the birth of his son Simba. The King's son is the rebellious prideful lion pup who just gets into trouble. However the King, his father, show ultimate love to the son, who even makes some selfish mistakes (his father forgave him) and continued to teach him to become a King. After costing his father's life, in a trap that was done by the King's brother Scar, and Simba believed it was his fault and ran away from his kingdom and from his troubles. However, he was reassured from seeing his father again from the Heavens, more humbled and listened to his father's council and to take his father's place in the animal kingdom as King.

2. The Godfather

     What a great relationship of father and son between Vito Corlione (Marlon Brando) showing his son Michael (Al Pacino). Michael who doesn't want to be a part of the family business, however truly loves his father for who he is, and not for his power as head of the family. Through the family wars, Michael realizes the importance of his father's position and role after refusing not to sell drugs or get into that filthy business. Michael truly finds love for his father, and knew he was the only one to continue the Family business (especially because Sonny got whacked). Michael put his own life on the line especially to hide his father when he was being hunted. He showed revenge for his father and what he stood for. He became his father. What is interesting was that Vito never wanted Michael to become part of the family business, when Michael took care of the guys who killed Sonny, Vito knew that Michael was it. Some random lines in the move that I love: " A man who isn't a family man isn't a real man." Or the famous line during dinner "We don't talk business at the table." I think the reason it is such a great movie and heavily quoted movies is because of the great relationship between the father and the son.

And the # 1

Field of Dreams

When I asked some of my respected movie critics and colleagues, the movie everyone agreed upon for the best father and son movie is Field of Dreams. I couldn't agree more. This movie shows the inner pain and inter conscience piece between Ray and his deceased father. He was instructed to build a baseball field in his corn field (his main source of income) when the voice says "If you build it, he will come." He is criticized and threatened to close his farm due t the lack of money to pay the mortgage due to the lack of corn he was able to produce because of the beautiful baseball field he had built. He follows the voices, finds others who also wanted to fulfill their dreams on their way. There is not a more appropriate film that shines to show our love to our father. It expresses how we always have those differences between love and redemption. Sometimes we think that it is too late to say we love someone, and this movie definitely shows that it is never too late.
